Anti-war demonstrators clashed with police outside a gun show today in the Australian city of Melbourne, the police resorted to the use of tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Hundreds of people gathered at the venue for the biennial International Land Forces Arms Show. Many of the demonstrators chanted slogans in support of the Palestinian cause and waved Palestinian flags.

Security forces tried to contain the demonstrators with the help of barricades.

According to Australian media, this is the biggest police operation in Melbourne since 2000, when the Australian city hosted the World Economic Forum.

Some demonstrators were detained.

Police closed several major thoroughfares and urged motorists to avoid certain parts of the city.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said people have the right to protest but should do so peacefully.
