Pope Francis arrives in Singapore - the last stop on his tour of Southeast Asia - 1

Pope Francis arrived in Singapore today from East Timor, which is the last leg of his 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The pope will be in the city-state on a two-day visit that will include a speech to political leaders and a mass at the national stadium, which the Vatican expects will draw around 55,000 people.

The Pope will also hold private meetings with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Francis is only the second pope to visit Singapore, following Pope John Paul II's brief 5-hour stay in 1986.

Catholics in the country number about 210,000 among a population of 5.92 million, according to Vatican figures.

The Pope arrived in Singapore from Dili, the capital of East Timor, where he celebrated mass yesterday in front of about 600,000 people (in the country's population of 1.3 million).

On landing in Singapore today, Francis was greeted by Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and received flowers by local school children.

In the Pope's program until the end of the day, only a private meeting with the community of Jesuit priests in the country is planned.
