The Hungarian astronaut's flight to the International Space Station will take place in early 2025. “We went through a very thorough process in selecting our a new astronaut. We have selected two people, the first is expected to fly, but we also have a backup who is undergoing the same training as the first in case a replacement is needed. According to the plans and the contract, our cosmonaut will fly early next year. We will fly to the International Space Station and stay there to conduct scientific experiments,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
In May, a special commission in Hungary identified the main candidate for the flight of an American manned spacecraft to the International Space Station in late 2024 - early 2025. This is 32-year-old engineer Tibor Kapu.

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry added that a work program has already been prepared for the astronaut “which is based on cooperation with industry, universities and research institutes”. At the same time, Szijjártó noted that Bertalan Farkas, the first Hungarian to fly in space in 1980, worked on Kapu's team. “He is a senior adviser on space issues,” said Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations.
