South Korea intends to send a team to Ukraine to monitor and analyze the deployment of North Korean soldiers who are said to be fighting in the country of Russia, an official of the presidential office in Seoul said today, quoted by Reuters.
Seoul and its allies believe that at least 11,000 North Korean troops have been sent to Russia, and more than 3,000 of them are already stationed near the front lines in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol discussed the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. According to a statement from the presidential administration in Seoul, Trudeau said that the deployment of North Korean troops in the Russo-Ukrainian war is likely to lead to an escalation of the conflict.
Trudeau has indicated that the war will have a greater impact on the security environment in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. He has also proposed closer cooperation between Canada and South Korea because of the development of the situation.
The United States confirmed yesterday that there are now North Korean soldiers in Russia's Kursk region, and several thousand more are traveling there, according to Reuters.
