The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, promulgated on Friday the law for the acquisition of 32 F-35 aircraft, the Agerpress agency reported exclusively for BTA.
The normative act aims to achieve the operational capabilities of air defense provided for in the Concept of achieving operational capabilities of air defense with multi-purpose aircraft of the fifth generation, within the framework of the acquisition program of the “multi-purpose aircraft of the fifth generation, F -35”, Phase I, as well as certain measures regarding the implementation of intergovernmental contracts specific to the international military sales program.
The law provides for the Government of Romania to award to the Government of the United States of America contracts of the type “Letter of Offer and Acceptance” (LOA) to acquire 32 F-35 aircraft, engines, munitions, initial logistics support, ongoing access to the global F-35 support chain, equipment and training services for aircrew, support personnel and aviation engineering and technical personnel, cryptographic equipment with a special regime, specialized assistance, as well as the implementation of industrial cooperation projects consisting in the transfer of technologies or products.
The necessary funds are provided by the state budget, through the budget of the Department of National Defense, or through loans or loan guarantees provided by the United States government, or through a combination thereof. It is also proposed that the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism enter into memorandums of understanding with the manufacturer of the F-35 aircraft for the implementation of industrial cooperation projects.
