The party of "Greens" today nominated the Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, as its official candidate for Chancellor of Germany in the upcoming parliamentary elections. At the congress of the ecological formation in Wiesbaden, Hesse, delegates approved his candidacy with 96.48 percent of the votes, DPA reported.
Habek will lead his election campaign together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Analena Berbok.
"We will participate in the elections," he declared in his speech after being nominated by the delegates.
Shortly before the vote, Berbock backed Habeck, whom he called "extremely pragmatic", saying that as economy minister he had managed to stay Germany's course during a crisis and freed the country from its dependence on Russia as an energy supplier .
Germany is currently preparing for early parliamentary elections, expected to be held in February, after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's governing coalition collapsed last week, DPA notes.
