A new military base of the US and the Western coalition in Syria is being created on the eastern bank of the Euphrates near the city of Ain al-Arab (Kobani). This was reported to the Al Hadath TV channel by sources from the Kurdish coalition "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF).
According to them, since the end of December 2024, nearly 300 trucks carrying cement blocks, electric generators, fuel tanks and ammunition have traveled to this area through the El-Walid checkpoint to the Syrian-Iraqi border. On Wednesday, a convoy of 50 trucks carrying military equipment, prefabricated buildings and bulldozers arrived there.
On December 19, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi proposed the creation of a demilitarized zone in Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) to prevent the invasion of Turkish troops there. At the same time, he noted that this zone, bordering Turkey, would be under the control of the US military.
On December 9, Turkish-backed units of the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched an offensive against SDF positions in Manbij and Ayn al-Arab (Kobani). Kurdish militias repelled the attacks and on December 25 announced a counteroffensive in the area of the Karakozak Bridge and the Tishreen Dam. on the Euphrates River.
On January 2, during a firefight with the enemy, the Kurds killed 15 FSA fighters. The US military is acting as mediators between the parties and is seeking a ceasefire on the Euphrates. Ankara has made it a precondition that the SDF disband and disarm.
25% of the territory of the Arab Republic is in the hands of the Kurds, including most of the provinces of Raqqa and Hasakah, as well as the northeast of Deir ez-Zor, where oil fields are located. Since 2015, at least nine US military bases have been established in areas controlled by the SDF.
