According to the US Air Force, four B-1B Lancer strategic bombers have been re-based at Andersen Air Force Base on the island of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean, Newsweek reports.
The bombers arrived from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. The deployment comes amid China's military presence near Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory, and disputed maritime zones in the South China Sea, US media reported.
The media noted that Guam is an ideal staging area for projecting military power, as it is located only 1,600 miles from Taiwan and the South China Sea and 1,800 miles from South Korea.
The bomber task force's mission is consistent with the goals of the national defense strategy, the US Pacific Command said.
