US President Donald Trump admitted for the first time that he may not be able to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia. He stated this at a meeting of the American government, speaking to the press, the Ukrainian UNIAN agency reports.
Answering a question whether it would not be a bad signal for China if Russia retained the occupied territories in Ukraine, Trump assured that he would do everything possible to conclude “the best agreement for both sides“.
“But for Ukraine, we will try especially hard to make sure that they get as much as possible. You have great trust in us, because you believe that peace is possible. But there is a chance that it will not work. I hope it will happen, for the sake of humanity,” the US president said.
Donald Trump promised during his election campaign last year that he would end the war between Russia and Ukraine “in 24 hours” if he was re-elected.
The new US president has not yet revealed how he might end the war, although he has already had direct contacts with Moscow - which was a precedent since the start of a full-scale war. Washington and Kiev’s European partners fear that Trump could convince Putin to stop his aggression only temporarily, but not to achieve a lasting peace.
