US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, urging him to make efforts to reduce tensions after the recent military strikes.
The call came hours before a meeting of Pakistan's National Security Council. This body alone can decide on the use of nuclear weapons, AFP recalls.
The State Department said Rubio offered US support for starting "constructive talks" between Pakistan and India to prevent further conflict.
The news of the conversation came after Pakistan launched retaliatory air strikes on India as part of Operation "Wall of Lead".
The name of the operation is derived from a verse from the Holy Quran and means "a wall built of molten lead", symbolizing strength, solidarity and impenetrability.
