US President Donald Trump has agreed to support the initiative of the European "coalition of the willing" to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, but he may change his mind, writes Politico, citing European officials.

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British and Polish Prime Ministers Keir Starmer and Donald Tusk were in Kiev for a meeting of the so-called "coalition of the willing". Before the visit, the four leaders issued a joint appeal to Russia to accept a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, threatening to increase pressure on it if it did not.

"Two European officials who were present in Kiev called the outcome of the meeting a great success, especially since the leaders managed to attract Trump and win his support, although one of the officials warned that the US president is prone to changing his mind quickly“, the article states.

According to the publication's sources, Macron called Trump during the talks in Kiev to assure him of his support. The American leader picked up the phone, even though it was not even seven in the morning in Washington at the time, and agreed to support the position of the European leaders.

Later, Merz expressed his gratitude to the American president for supporting the initiative during a press conference in Kiev.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that he would discuss with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the possibility of holding talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. Putin also offered Kiev to resume direct talks in Istanbul on May 15 - without any preconditions. US President Donald Trump said after Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for direct talks with representatives of Kiev in Istanbul that this was a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine, and promised to continue working with both sides.
