Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets due to a Russian drone attack near Tulcea County, according to a press release from the Ministry of National Defense of the Balkan country, BTA reports.

According to the information released, two aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, part of the combat service of the Air Police, took off from the 86th Air Base in Borcea and carried out missions to monitor and protect the country's airspace in the context of a new Russian drone attack last night. The attack was against civilian targets and port infrastructure in Ukraine in the area of the Valkov area, near the border with Romania.

The fighter jets returned to base at around 01:30 local (and Bulgarian) time. The radar systems of the Ministry of National Defense did not show “any unauthorized intrusions of observed targets into the national airspace“, the cited source stated.

Today, representatives of the department are to carry out, in accordance with standard procedures, searches in areas where risks may arise as a result of last night's situation. Allied structures are informed in real time.

“The Ministry of National Defense remains firm in its actions to condemn these attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian civilian targets and infrastructure elements, which are unjustified and in serious contradiction with the norms of international law“, the press release emphasizes.
