Germany will send warships to the Arctic in response to the growing Russian military presence. This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing The Telegraph, Focus writes.
According to him, the Bundeswehr will send patrol ships to the North Atlantic and the Arctic to "demonstrate its presence".
"Maritime threats are increasing... Russia is militarizing the Arctic. "We are seeing an increase in the activity of Russian submarines operating in the area," Pistorius said.
It is noted that German naval forces will be deployed to the region this year, and the German navy will conduct exercises with its allies on its way to the Arctic.
Pistorius noted that German submarines, patrol aircraft and frigates will be deployed to demonstrate “our commitment to the region“.
At the same time, according to the British media, the new patrols are part of Germany's broader goal “to play a much more important role in defending the West against Russia in response to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine”.
