US President Donald Trump said in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday that he was not responsible for the suspension of arms deliveries to Kiev, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the details of the conversation.
"In a phone call on Friday, Trump told Zelensky that he had ordered an inspection of the Pentagon's ammunition stockpile after the US struck Iran's nuclear facilities last month, but did not order the department to freeze the arms deliveries“, the article said.
Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said at a briefing on Monday that Defense Secretary Pitt Hegseth, who has taken office, has ordered an investigation "to ensure that everything that goes out of the country is in America's interests."
Also, as the sources note, Trump assured Zelensky that the US would provide "as much military assistance as possible."
A Defense Department official said the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff had completed its assessment of the frozen aid to Ukraine. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine, is preparing a recommendation to Hegseth on whether to resume the deliveries.
According to the publication's interlocutors, the White House National Security Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss how to proceed with the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
