German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful is on an official visit to Israel today, the DPA agency reported, quoted by BTA.
During the two-day visit, Wadeful will present the German government's position on the conflict in the Gaza Strip. He will hold meetings with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, as well as with representatives of the Palestinian Authority.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the results of these talks could influence Berlin's decision on whether to support possible sanctions against Israel over the situation in Gaza. He said the German government reserved the right to take such action if the situation did not change.
After a meeting of the German security cabinet this week, Merz called on Israel to take immediate measures to improve the "catastrophic humanitarian situation" in the Palestinian enclave.
Germany is also pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza, calling on both the Israeli government and the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" to reach an agreement.
