The European Commission said that the bill adopted today by the Ukrainian parliament, which restores the independence of the two main anti-corruption services, restores key mechanisms to protect their autonomy. This was reported by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.
“We believe that the new law responds to the main challenges related to the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office“, said European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier.
Earlier today, the Ukrainian parliament approved the bill with a convincing majority of 331 votes “for“ and none “against“. The initiative was introduced by President Volodymyr Zelensky last week, following massive public protests and increased international pressure, including from senior EU officials.
The measure has already been sent for signature by the head of state. The law is seen as a crucial step in overcoming one of the most serious political crises in the country since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
