Greek authorities have detained 47 unregistered migrants on the island of Rhodes after they were spotted disembarking from a boat in the coastal area of Lardos this morning, the newspaper „Kathimerini“ reports, BTA reports.
The vessel was spotted by a coast guard patrol, which immediately launched a coordinated operation with local police. During the operation, the police located and detained the migrants - five men, 16 women and 26 minors, who were taken to the Rhodes port authorities.
A separate operation was launched in parallel to capture two suspected traffickers who were seen leaving a support boat near the coast. Authorities later announced that a 40-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking.
There is no information yet on the nationality of the detained migrants, nor whether there were other passengers on board the boat.
