Carney after call with Trump: There is progress in trade talks between Canada and the United States - 1

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he had a long and productive conversation with US President Donald Trump on Monday, discussing trade and a number of other topics, „Reuters“ reported, News.bg reports.

His comments are seen as another sign of a gradual reduction in tensions between the two countries.

Canada and the United States have been in a trade war since the beginning of the year, when Washington imposed tariffs on some Canadian goods, and Ottawa responded with countermeasures.

„We spoke in detail on a wide range of issues, including trade, but also geopolitical. It was a good conversation“, Carney told reporters in Toronto before a cabinet meeting.

Last month, Canada announced that it would remove some of the retaliatory tariffs on American goods and step up negotiations. A move that has been praised by President Trump. However, Ottawa has stressed that it will maintain tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and autos, designated as strategic sectors.

Carney said a team of senior Canadian officials was in Washington for a new round of trade talks. But he warned that progress would be slow:
“Don't expect immediate white smoke over any of these strategic sectors, but that's the kind of conversation we're having and we're going to continue to have.“
