Vietnam's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Nguyen Hoang Nguyen reaffirmed his country's firm and consistent position on disarmament, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons and protecting the right of states to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, BTA reports.

In his speech, Nguyen stressed the importance of the upcoming Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026 and called on all countries to actively contribute to strengthening the process. Vietnam and ASEAN countries have called on UN member states to support the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone initiative as an important step towards regional and global peace and security.

UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu noted that 80 years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world still faces nuclear threats. She stressed that ending nuclear testing is a shared responsibility for international peace and security, and called on countries that have not yet signed or ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty to do so urgently, as the 30th anniversary of its signing approaches.
