Germans are ready (in words) to buy a Chinese car, but the reality is different - 1

A new survey of over 10,000 German drivers regarding their attitude towards cars from China has shown that approx. 60 percent of respondents are ready to buy a car from China if the price suits them. Among other incentives for buying a Chinese car are innovative technologies, attractive design and build quality.

The German automobile club ADAC surveyed 10,079 local drivers about their attitudes towards Chinese cars. It is noted that almost 2/3 of the respondents are ready to buy a car from China, and the main incentive for the purchase will be the price. Interestingly, interest in Chinese cars declines with age. They are mostly chosen by young Germans who prefer electric cars.

At the same time, Chinese diesel cars are somewhere in the tail of the ranking. In addition to the price, which 83 percent pay attention to, innovative technologies (55%), design (37%) and build quality (26%) can be reasons for choosing a Chinese car.

Of those who are still not ready to buy a car from the PRC, about 40% refer to the underdeveloped network of dealers and service centers, and 39% have doubts about the quality. It is also worth noting that a third of respondents are concerned about data protection, as most modern cars are constantly connected to the network.

According to the survey, demand for cars from China in Germany has increased by almost 48 percent in the past year. However, sales volumes remain low and there is no talk of a quick takeover of the market. Thus, in 2023, the share of Chinese cars in the total number of new car registrations was only 1.18 percent. There is another example: this September, BYD sold only 140 cars in Germany, while Tesla sold 3,758.
