Haskovo invests in modern ecological infrastructure for bio-waste management - 1

Haskovo Municipality begins the implementation of a project to build a system for separate collection of household biodegradable waste and upgrade the existing composting installation in the land of the village of Garvanovo. The initiative aims to cover households, institutions and businesses in the city and settlements, ensuring environmentally friendly treatment of green and biodegradable waste through composting.

The total amount of the investment is over 8.82 million leva, of which 5.84 million leva is a grant from the Environment Program 2021-2027 (POS). The implementation period is 30 months.

The project will purchase brown containers for collecting biowaste and specialized trucks for their transportation. All households, schools, kindergartens, public catering establishments, commercial establishments, hotels, hospitals and other organizations will be covered.

The project also provides for upgrading the capacity of the existing composting installation. Five of the composting cells located under a canopy will be reconstructed, and the remaining five will be used as reception areas and storage areas for the finished compost. An open area with an aeration system for compost maturation will be separated. The improvement will be carried out on an existing site in the RCTNO - Garvanovo, which already has the necessary engineering infrastructure - water supply, sewage, treatment plant, power grid and substation.

Currently, only green waste from parks, gardens and green areas is collected separately and sent for composting in the municipality of Haskovo. The introduction of the new system will ensure comprehensive management of the remaining biodegradable waste, which currently constitutes a significant share of mixed municipal waste.

The implementation of the project will achieve the separate collection and recycling of about 8,561.30 tons of waste per year, which will lead to a significant reduction in the amount of landfilled municipal waste and improve resource management.

The implementation of the project will increase the economic efficiency in the management of biodegradable waste, develop services of public interest and create new jobs. The upgraded infrastructure will allow the municipality to provide better quality, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable services for the benefit of residents and businesses.
