As of today, residents of the capital's districts of “Lyulin“ and “Krasno Selo“ will have to temporarily dispose of their household waste in large gray containers, intended in principle for construction waste.
The measure is being introduced after the expiration of the contracts with the current cleaning company, and the mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev said that he will not sign a new contract with the only remaining candidate.
"The colleagues have been on the ground all day and on the first day of this crisis situation it was established that the majority of the containers in “Lyulin“ have not yet been removed. Usually this happens by early afternoon. We note that of the 8 announced points with large containers, only one has been placed at the moment, and that with a much smaller gauge. There is one additional container located in "Sofekostroy". I received assurance that the remaining containers will be located by the end of the day", announced the mayor of "Lyulin" Georgi Todorov at a briefing, quoted by novini.bg.
"The district administration is fulfilling its commitment to collect waste from small bins around bus stops and on the streets. All nearly 800 bins have been cleaned, and they are cleaned at least twice a day", he added.
"The worrying thing is that currently there are only 3 trucks for the entire region that can transport waste from between 5 and 8 containers. And in "Lyulin" there are about 1,300 entrances and about 1,500 gray waste containers. You can judge for yourself that this capacity is insufficient and every day there will be an accumulation of delays in the transport of waste. Most of them have not been removed at the moment. Until now, waste from each container was removed once a day," added the district mayor.
Todorov is categorical that it is necessary to switch to a 24-hour three-shift work regime with all the available equipment at the Sofia Municipality's disposal in order to minimize delays.
"Lulin" does not deserve to be Sofia's landfill. Sofia residents live here with equal rights to all others. It is my duty to protect the health and lives of people. I call on citizens to report uncollected waste. I am also opening a special email for reports - [email protected], said Todorov.
