A case of anthrax, which affects both animals and humans, has been confirmed in a livestock farm in the Harmanli village of Slavyanovo. This was reported to BTA by Haskovo Regional Governor Dr. Stefka Zdravkova. Laboratory tests of samples have proven the presence of the bacteria in the farm with about 200 sheep and 100 cattle.
Suspicions about the infection arose at the end of last week. As a result, vaccination of the animals at the site was undertaken, which continues in the surrounding farms, Zdravkova added. Disinfection has also been carried out. The peculiarity is that in contact with oxygen, the causative microorganism forms spores that can remain for decades.
Zdravkova, who is a veterinarian by education and profession, predicts that this will remain a single isolated case. As for the dumping of people, Zdravkova explained that it does not happen easily. Veterinary authorities are conducting an inventory of animal farms in the area.
A Municipal Epizootic Commission is expected to meet in Harmanli today to outline additional measures against the disease. Most likely, the movement of four-legged friends from the affected area will be restricted, as well as the common pasture and watering place.
