Karadjov: Progress on the construction of the Plovdiv railway junction is 85% - 1

This is one of the most complex and strategic projects in the railway sector in our country. With it, Plovdiv receives a modern infrastructure, fully compliant with European safety and interoperability standards. The Plovdiv railway junction is a key intersection, through which over 100 trains pass every day, making it critical for the national network. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov during an inspection of the Plovdiv railway junction development project.

The total cost of the project is over 298 million leva, financed under the Connecting Europe Facility and the state budget, with the completion date being June 2026.

The biggest transformation is the breakthrough under the Plovdiv Central Station – a two-lane road tunnel with a length of about 800 meters, of which 580 meters are in the closed part. “The breakthrough will provide a direct connection between the northern and southern parts of Plovdiv and will solve the over 50-year-old problem of the city“, emphasized Karadjov. The facility also provides convenient access to the “Yug“ and “Rodopi“ bus stations, “Spartak“ stadium and commercial and administrative areas.

The project includes modernization of the tracks and the contact network, new signaling and telecommunications systems, construction of new platforms and sheds, facilities for people with reduced mobility, pedestrian underpasses and overpasses, noise protection facilities and a modern drainage system.

“Two construction contracts are being implemented under the project. The first covers the modernization of the Plovdiv-Krumovo and Plovdiv-Skutare sections, including the Plovdiv distribution, Krumovo and Skutare stations, with progress of 83%. The second contract is for the modernization of the Plovdiv station and the construction of the transport breakthrough, with progress here of 85%“, said Deputy Prime Minister Karadjov.

He noted that in parallel, the reconstruction of the Concrete Bridge worth nearly 5 million leva was completed, with traffic on it restored from December 2024. “Thus, we provide two parallel connections through the railway zone, which significantly improves the organization of traffic“, said Karadjov.

The inspection was attended by the regional governor of Plovdiv Hristina Yancheva, the mayor of the city Kostadin Dimitrov, municipal councilors, representatives of the contractor, etc.
