Although we are still in the beginning of winter and even if the stones and grasses are not covered, we already have an avalanche danger reported on characteristic slopes of Vitosha (The Holes in the Wall), Rila (The Channels of Rila Lakes) and Pirin. This was announced by the Mountain Rescue Service on its official Facebook profile.
According to the rescuers, the strong southwesterly winds worsened the situation and filled the negative landforms.
"Don't be fooled by the small amounts of snow on the remaining slopes. We remind you to drive EXCLUSIVELY and ONLY on the winter wheel markings!", the rescuers advise.
"Avoid walking, skiing, or snowboarding on negative landforms (Gutters, hollows, sharp changes in slope on northern slopes)".
In the event of an avalanche, the rescue service advises to immediately call the Mountain Rescue Service (MSS) – 112. "Say WHERE the accident happened, who and HOW MANY PEOPLE are affected! Then start searching for the overwhelmed people!".
"If you witness an avalanche near popular tourist sites and no one is injured, please alert the PSS again – this will prevent a potential redundant manhunt!", they added.
