An avalanche killed a man in Pirin, and another was seriously injured. The incident occurred in the area of the “Vihren“ hut. Details of the incident were given to bTV by one of the rescuers sent to the scene - Ivaylo Valeov.
“They were driving off the slopes, they were driving. Yes, it's forbidden, but people do it anyway“, he confirmed.
“A friend, a colleague, called and said that he saw a large avalanche falling near the “Vihren“ hut, two people were moving in its lower part. At the same time, we were doing a training on the same topic and fortunately we were also equipped with snowmobiles and very quickly, within 5-6 minutes, we were at the scene of the incident“, he also said.
“Then we walked to the avalanche itself, it turned out that one boy had injuries, there was no danger to his life, the other, unfortunately, had no vital signs. Everyone had individual avalanche equipment, but they did not have airbags, but in my opinion they would not have helped them either, the chutes are very long, narrow and there are many rock thresholds and just luck may have saved the other boy“, Valeov added.
Due to the higher temperatures in recent days, the conditions for skiing outside the ski area in Pirin are risky and there is a high risk of avalanches, the MES also warned.
