"January 28 marks 27 years since the opening of the first section of the metro in Sofia. Today, the development of the most ecological and fastest public transport continues - 10 new stations are being built in three different directions of the city, which will reduce traffic and improve air quality. The metro is a strategic project for Sofia and for the quality of life in the city," said the mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev.

What is currently being built:

10 new metro stations are being built:

- three on "Vladimir Vazov” blvd. through "Poduyane";
- six stations through "Slatina" residential area to “Tsarigradsko shose”;
- metro station on "Pancho Vladigerov" blvd. along the "Slivnitsa" – – "Obelya" line.

The plans are for the new metro stations to be ready in 2027. With them, the metro will handle 46% of the daily passenger flow.

The section of the metro through „Poduyane“ – "H. Dimitar" – – Levski“ is almost 70% complete. The construction of the 3 km route should be completed in mid-2026. With the new 3 stations, over 40 thousand more people will use the metro. The route will help reduce traffic in the section by about 25% and harmful gases by several thousand tons per year. The section is financed by the Recovery and Sustainability Plan in the amount of 217.5 million leva excluding VAT.

The extension of Line 3 through the residential area "Slatina" to "Arena 8888 Sofia" and "Tsarigradsko Shose" began construction at the end of 2023. The route is 6 km long, will have 6 stations and should be ready in 2027. The average completion for the section is about 25%.

We plan on February 6 this year to officially launch the work of the tunnel boring machine, which will build the tunnels for the metro extension through “Slatina”. The tunnel boring machine “Vitosha” will start from the starting shaft of the station at “Tsarigradsko Shose” Blvd. in the direction of the metro station next to “Arena 8888 Sofia” and Sofia Tech Park.

The machine weighs 1,600 tons, is about 86 meters long, and its head is 9.4 meters in diameter. The machine is expected to make an average progress of over 10 meters per day.

The construction of the tunnel should be completed by mid-2026, and the entire section should be put into operation in 2027, which will enable 75 thousand Sofia residents to move more comfortably and quickly. The total cost of the project is BGN 540 million excluding VAT, of which: BGN 106.6 million from the Cohesion Fund and BGN 433.4 million from an EIB loan and co-financing.
