A large fire broke out in the land around the Stara Zagora village of Madrets this evening, BNT reported. Due to the hot weather and strong wind, the fire grew and reached the first houses in the settlement.

According to the mayor of the village, Iliya Shikov, the fire has surrounded the settlement from all sides.

Residents have been warned of a possible evacuation, but a large part of them refuse to leave their homes. Instead, they are using hoses, buckets and improvised means to try to keep the flames away from their properties.

The municipality of Galabovo has declared a partial state of emergency, and teams from the fire departments in Galabovo, Stara Zagora, Radnevo and Haskovo have been sent to the scene, as well as heavy equipment from “Mini Maritsa-iztok“, which is making clearings to contain the fire. Local authorities are demanding additional help and resources as the flames continue to spread. The BG-Alert system has not yet been activated, but this could happen at any moment, the regional governor of Stara Zagora said.
