A summer camp leader in Britain who drugged children with sweets laced with a sedative before sexually abusing them has been sentenced to 23 years and 10 months in prison.
John Reuben, 76, who ran a camp for at least 27 years,was arrested in July 2025 after eight children were taken to hospital.
Leicester Crown Court heard the charges against a former vet whoadmitted drugging and abusing two boys aged around 13.He was also chargedwith child cruelty and drug use.
It has been established that the sedative "Xanax" in liquid form was used to anesthetize some of the victims at the summer camp. However, Ruben also used other sedatives, and he himself took "Viagra". The man also put sedatives in his wife's tea so that she would not notice his absence at night, it became known in court.
Ruben was a member of the church council at the church "St. Peter" in his hometown of Ruddington, where he worked as a volunteer with young people.
His wife told the court that she felt "completely betrayedby him.
"He spent decades trying to paint a picture of himself as a righteous, honorable man, when in fact he was a sadistic, monstrous pedophile", Susan Ruben stated.
