Railway accident kills two, injures twelve in Russian Far East

Two platform cars and a track-laying crane derail on a railway line in Russia's Amur Region

Two people were killed and 12 were injured after two platform cars and a track-laying crane derailed on a railway line in Russia's Amur Region, the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office reported on its Telegram channel.

The accident occurred on Friday at around 8:40 p.m. local time on the Belenkaya-Fedoseev section in the Tynda region of the Far Eastern Railway. During work to replace tracks and sleepers during the “technical window“ two platform cars and a rail-laying crane derailed.

As the Eastern Interregional Transport Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee specified to RIA Novosti, the rail-laying train entered a section with dismantled rail-laying grids and collided with a bulldozer. At the time of the incident, 12 workers were in one of the rail-laying cars, and two workers were on the rail-laying crane. As a result, one person died on the spot, the second died in a medical facility, and the remaining workers received various injuries.

„Fourteen people were injured, two of whom died. The Tynda Transport Prosecutor's Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the railway accident“, the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

The injured have been hospitalized, two of them are in intensive care. A criminal case has been opened under Art. 143, Art. 3 of the Criminal Code (violation of occupational safety requirements, resulting in the death of two people through negligence).
