About 500 people participated in a demonstration against government policies in Lima last night, which escalated into violent clashes with police, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.

Organized by the youth collective “Generation Z“, the rally led to clashes with police when protesters tried to approach the government building and parliament.

Police used tear gas to disperse groups of protesters who responded with stones and sticks.

Images of the injured were shared on social media. Police said three of their officers were injured.

The protest is part of growing social unrest in Peru, with protesters denouncing corruption and a pension reform approved by parliament.

In the final stages of her term, which ends on July 28 next year, President Dina Boluarte is facing record unpopularity, largely due to the rise of organized crime.

This week, the legislature approved a law requiring young people over 18 to join a private pension fund, despite the precarious working conditions faced by many in the country.
