Colombian President Gustavo Petro called at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly for legal proceedings against American officials and US President Donald Trump for the attacks on boats in the Caribbean.

“Those killed by missiles in the Caribbean were not members of the “Tren de Aragua“ gang, which perhaps no one here has heard of, nor of any other group“, said Petro. “They were residents of the Caribbean, probably Colombians. And if they were Colombians, then, with all due respect to those who run the UN, criminal proceedings should be opened against American officials. Including against the highest official who ordered the attack - US President Trump, who authorized the missile attack on young people seeking only to escape poverty.“

The Colombian president noted that “the young people on the boat, even if they were carrying illegal cargo, were not drug traffickers“. “These were simple, poor young men from Latin America who had no other choice. Drug traffickers live elsewhere, and this is not Latin America. The real drug traffickers live in New York, just a few blocks from here and in Miami,“ the Colombian leader said.

On August 19, three US Navy destroyers were sent to the southern Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela “to conduct operations against drug cartels“. The US has deployed a nuclear submarine, a missile cruiser, landing ships and 4,500 troops to the region. The US Navy has already destroyed at least two speedboats with a total crew of 14 in international Caribbean waters that were allegedly transporting drugs from Venezuela.
