Pro-Russian bloc in Moldova suffers heavy defeat  - 1

The pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won over 50 percent of the votes in yesterday's parliamentary elections in Moldova. This is shown by the results with 99.91 percent of the protocols processed, the Central Election Commission (CEC) announced.

According to preliminary results, the PAS, whose informal leader is President Maia Sandu, received 50.16 percent.

The opposition "Patriotic Bloc", composed of four pro-Russian parties, is in second place with 24.19 percent, preliminary results show. The "Alternative" bloc has a result of 7.97 percent, "Our Party" Renato Usatii's party received 6.2 percent, and the "Democracy at Home" party won 5.6 percent of the vote.

According to preliminary results announced by Moldova's Central Election Commission, the remaining parties, coalitions and independent candidates did not receive enough votes to elect representatives to the 101-seat legislature.

The threshold for representation in parliament is 5 percent for parties, 7 percent for coalitions and 2 percent for independent candidates. According to CEC data, voter turnout was 52.18 percent.
