New military force to fight gangs in Haiti - 1

The UN Security Council approved a new international force on Tuesday to fight criminal gangs in Haiti, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The new force, which will consist of 5,500 troops, will replace the current Kenya-led mission, whose mandate expires on October 2.

Twelve of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the new force, while China, Russia and Pakistan abstained.

Haiti has long been unable to cope with powerful criminal gangs, which currently control 90% of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The Caribbean country with a population of about 12 million people is the poorest in the Americas.
