The success of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Budapest is of "fundamental existential interest" for Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, quoted by the Hungarian MTI agency, BTA reported.

Orban criticized his left-wing opponents, who claim that the meeting is good for the country's international image, but has no direct impact on the lives of Hungarians. According to him, the success of the negotiations would have a "direct impact" on prices in the country.

„The first three years of the war between Russia and Ukraine have cost Hungary 23.3 billion euros. Energy prices have risen, inflation jumped“, Orbán wrote on social media.

He stressed that the imposed sanctions have also had a serious impact on the economy - trade turnover has decreased, government bond yields have increased, and financing the country has become more expensive.

“The end of the war will put an end to all this. The Hungarian economy will finally take a breath and we will be able to return to the growth we had before the war“, the prime minister said.

“Everyone will earn more money and even bread will become cheaper. That is why it is in Hungary's main existential interest that the Budapest summit be a success. Let us do everything we can to make this happen“, he added.
