Migrants die in shipwreck off Greek island of Lesbos - 1

At least four migrants have died and seven have been rescued after a shipwreck overnight off the Greek island of Lesbos in the eastern Aegean Sea, Greek state broadcaster ERT reported, quoted by BTA.

The rescue operation is currently ongoing because the exact number of passengers on board is unknown. The rescued migrants are from Sudan. They do not speak English, which is why there are still difficulties in getting information from them.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. (0230 GMT). So far, rescue teams have found the bodies of four people who died in the shipwreck. The search is being carried out both at sea and on land.

Vessels and a "Super Puma" helicopter are involved in the operation. Authorities are being hampered by strong winds in the area, which are reaching force six on the Beaufort scale.
