Data from the phones of millions of users in Belgium has been stolen and put up for sale by intermediaries, with current and former high-ranking officials of the EU institutions among those affected, local media reported, BTA reported.
It is noted that the data is anonymous, but a check of the numbers of well-known senior figures in the European institutions reveals that they are on the lists. It is specified that such data allows permanent tracking of the user's location, which creates threats to his security and the safety of the organization where he works.
Large companies in Belgium engaged in activities in sensitive areas have also been affected. A spokesman for the European Commission stated on this occasion that additional measures have been taken to protect its employees and warnings have been sent to the other European institutions.
