Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today that the buildup of US troops in the Caribbean Sea is “unfounded“ and contributes to increasing tensions in the region, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
According to Moscow, the US military campaign in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific, which Washington presents as an operation against illegal drug trafficking, has led to attacks on at least 14 vessels, in which 61 people died. In recent months, the US has significantly increased its military presence in the region.
“We are in constant contact, we do not hide it. "The agenda is broad, with security issues taking center stage," Ryabkov said, responding to a question about communication between Moscow and Washington amid US President Donald Trump's statements about possible nuclear tests.
The Russian diplomat added that a possible meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump requires thorough preparation, which the foreign ministries of both countries are currently working on, TASS quoted him as saying.
