Canada announces new sanctions against Russia - 1

Canada announced new sanctions against Russia today over the war in Ukraine, targeting drone production and its energy revenues, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.

The announcement of the new Canadian sanctions was made as part of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Canada, at which they will reaffirm their support for Kiev.

"Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to the sovereignty of Ukraine and its people, who are resolutely defending their rights in the face of belligerent and hostile actions" of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said.

She added that "Canada will continue to increase pressure through sanctions, in coordination with its allies and partners, until Russia ends its unjustified invasion of Ukraine".

Her Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sibiga called on the G-7 to continue investing in the production of missiles and drones, as well as in Ukraine's air defense, noting that "Putin is still deluded that he can win".

The Canadian sanctions target 13 people and 11 companies, many of whom are linked to the development and deployment of Russia's drone program, a statement said.

"Several Russian companies specializing in liquefied natural gas were also sanctioned, as Russia continues to rely on energy revenues to finance its aggressive "the war against Ukraine," the text added.

The new Canadian sanctions also target 100 ships from the so-called Russian shadow fleet. The measures are largely in line with sanctions recently announced by the United States, the European Union and Britain, AFP reported.
