The majority of Germans would support compulsory military service for men born after 2008, DPA reported, citing a sociological survey, BTA reported.

The survey, conducted by the INSA Institute for Public Opinion Research (INSA) on behalf of the "Bild" newspaper, found that 58 percent of respondents consider the introduction of compulsory military service right, while 29 percent disagree and 13 percent say they cannot say.

Earlier this week, the German government, made up of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative bloc and the center-left Social Democrats, reached a hard-won compromise to strengthen Germany's armed forces with the introduction of a new model of voluntary military service in order to increase the size of the army.

The government's plan stipulates that if voluntary military service is not sufficient to fill the ranks of the Bundeswehr (German armed forces), parliament can introduce compulsory military service, in which conscripts who will serve as soldiers will be determined at random.

However, 57 percent of those surveyed do not expect enough volunteers to come forward to meet the Bundeswehr's personnel goals. Only 25 percent believe this model will be successful, and 18 percent say they cannot give an opinion.

Personal willingness to do military service remains low, with only 31 percent of respondents indicating that they are willing to volunteer, while 55 percent completely rule out this option.

The INSA sociological survey was conducted between November 13 and 14 among 1,003 people.

Germany abolished compulsory military service in 2011, but it can be reinstated by a simple parliamentary majority, including in times of heightened tension or defense emergencies.

The constitution currently provides for compulsory military service only for men. Proposals to include women would require a constitutional amendment.
