Hungary will reject the possibility of including the Transcarpathian region, a region in western Ukraine, in its territory if such a proposal is made.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this in response to a question from Matthias Döpfner, CEO of the German media group Axel Springer, in a show broadcast on YouTube on the evening of November 15.
„You Germans have already tried this in other territories and in the end you lost. So experience tells us that we should not embark on this adventure,“ Orbán said.
Budapest has long accused Kiev of violating the rights of the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathian region, in particular their right to use their native language in culture and education. The Hungarian government has repeatedly warned that it will not allow Ukraine to join the European Union until these issues are resolved.
