During the conversation, the Ukrainian leader said that Ukrainian forces must remain capable of defending their country's sovereignty. This was announced by a German government spokesman familiar with the content of the telephone conversation.
Starmer, Macron and Merz expressed to Zelensky their continued and full support for Ukraine on the path to achieving a lasting and just peace, the spokesman added.
The four European leaders also welcomed US efforts to end the war in Ukraine, in particular to provide Ukraine with solid security guarantees, the German government spokesman said.
The leaders of Germany, France and Britain stressed during the telephone conversation with Zelensky that they wanted to preserve vital European and Ukrainian interests in the long term, Agence France-Presse reported.
At the same time, German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said that Ukraine must remain able to defend itself and that the current front in Ukraine must be the starting point for reaching an agreement, Agence France-Presse reported. This statement came against the background that the American plan provides for territorial concessions that Ukraine will make to Moscow and also limits the Ukrainian army, notes Agence France-Presse.
After the phone call with Zelensky, a statement from the Elysee Palace said that during it the leaders emphasized that a decision on Ukraine is needed, which should be taken with the participation of Ukraine and which preserves the sovereignty of this country and guarantees its future security, Reuters reported.
All decisions concerning the EU and NATO must be agreed with the consent of all member states of both organizations, the Elysee Palace statement added.
After the phone call, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the principle regarding any agreement on Ukraine must be that all issues concerning Ukraine must be resolved by Ukraine itself, Reuters reported. He added that work on the Ukrainian issue should start from the current situation as a starting point.
Yesterday, a US official said that the US plan for Ukraine includes security guarantees from Washington and its European allies equivalent to those of NATO in the event of a future attack, notes Agence France-Presse.
According to the plan, Kiev must commit to never joining NATO. The plan does not envisage any peacekeeping forces on Ukrainian territory, but it does envisage the deployment of European fighter jets in Poland to protect the Ukrainian state.
