Around 40 Bulgarian tourists are stranded in Sri Lanka due to large-scale floods that have covered large parts of the country, Nova reported, News.bg reports.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed about the situation and is in constant contact with the travel agency that organized the trip.

The Bulgarian honorary consul, responsible for the region, has left for the place where the group is located. Due to the complicated situation, communication with tourists is difficult. There are no reports of Bulgarian casualties.

Southeast Asia is facing some of the most serious floods in years. In Thailand and Indonesia, the total number of deaths exceeds 100 people.

Schools and state institutions were closed in Sri Lanka. Official figures show 56 people have died in floods and landslides, and more than 600 homes have been damaged. The country has been battling severe weather conditions since last week, with heavy rains yesterday further worsening the situation, flooding homes, farmland and road infrastructure and triggering new landslides.

In the mountainous areas of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya alone, the death toll from landslides has risen to more than 25. 14 people are injured and 21 are missing. Deaths have also been recorded in other parts of the country.
