The European era of energy independence from Russia is already a fact and this era must be irreversible, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced today to the European Parliament in Strasbourg ahead of the summit in Brussels starting tomorrow, BTA reports.
"This week embodies the reality of the moment, the reality of a world that has become dangerous - a world of predators. We must protect ourselves and depend on ourselves. The peace that existed until yesterday is no longer there. We have no time for nostalgia. At the same time, others have no right to define us," said Von der Leyen, referring to the United States.
She drew attention to the fact that the share of the world's gross domestic product of the United States has also fallen. "This is not a question of economics. It is about changing the course of the global economy. And that is why no one should be shocked by what others think of us", pointed out the President of the European Commission.
"The new era of European energy independence from Russia is already a fact and it must be irreversible. We will part with Russian fossil fuels forever! Just a year ago this was unthinkable. But we are not talking about a coincidence, but about hard work", noted Von der Leyen.
"We are moving mountains. This year we have done as much for European defense as in the previous ten years", the head of the European Commission emphasized to MEPs in the plenary hall in Strasbourg.
