Volodymyr Zelensky: We have big differences with Putin on the Donbas issue - 1

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that although an agreement has been reached on most of the 20 points of the peace plan, the issue of Donbas remains difficult, Ukrinform reported, quoted by BTA.

Zelensky said this during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump after the talks in Mar-a-Lago.

In response to a question about whether the meeting had led to a compromise on the Donbas issue, Zelensky said: "You know our position. We must respect our legislation, our people and the territory that we control. And, of course, our position is very clear. That is why President Trump said that this is a very difficult issue and, of course, we have different positions on it with the Russians."

The Ukrainian president noted that a referendum or parliamentary vote could be held to ratify the peace plan as a whole or certain individual provisions. The referendum, the president said, is only one of the key tools.

Ukrinform recalls that Zelensky earlier stated that point 14 of the draft framework document between Ukraine, the United States, Russia and Europe on ending the war, which concerns the resolution of territorial issues, could include the following compromise: Russian forces will withdraw from the Dnepropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. At the same time, a "free economic zone" will be created in Donbas.

Such a compromise, if reached, will have to be submitted to a national referendum.
