In a sharp turn, US President Donald Trump said today that he is “on the same page” with Minnesota's Democratic governor after a second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen in the state by immigration officials sparked fierce reactions, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Trump's surprising comments on social media after his "very good conversation," as he himself reported, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz may indicate a de-escalation of his crackdown on immigrants in the state.
Walz and other Democratic leaders have openly opposed the influx of immigrants, which they described as an illegal invasion that threatens public safety.
For his part, Trump has accused the Minnesota governor of incompetence over the past month for his inability to stop a welfare fraud scandal in the state.
Earlier, the American president announced that he would sent his special representative for immigration enforcement Tom Homan to work with local authorities in Minnesota.
US immigration agents shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretty on Saturday during clashes with protesters in Minneapolis. Although other senior Trump officials have described Pretty as a “domestic terrorist“, Homan has yet to publicly comment on the incident.
In a statement, Trump said Homan “was not involved“ in the Minnesota crackdown “but knows and likes many of the people there“.
