Prime Minister Fico: Slovakia should reject invitation to join the Peace Council - 1

Slovakia should reject US President Donald Trump's invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council, said the country's Prime Minister Robert Fico, quoted by TASR.

According to him, Slovakia is not "for the creation of parallel structures that we do not know everything about". In addition, Fico did not agree with the membership fee of billions of dollars, as well as the abolition of existing international institutions.

The government will consider the issue at its regular meeting on Wednesday, January 28.

"I think that Slovakia should very gratefully reject this invitation and not seek it anymore. However, Slovakia will be among the countries that have always called and will always call for peace," the prime minister stressed.

According to him, "existing international institutions, such as the UN, should be reformed, not abolished."

Robert Fico stressed that his country has "a huge interest in becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2028-2029, and during all our visits we ask our partners to support our membership."

He noted that he was not sure whether the Peace Council was intended to be a general body for many cases or simply an ad hoc institution of a temporary nature to deal with the situation in the Gaza Strip.

As for the membership fee, the prime minister pointed out that "the government of the Slovak Republic will never pay a membership fee for joining such an institution."
