Unpaid dues! UN faces imminent financial collapse - 1

The UN Secretary-General has warned states that the organization is at risk of "inevitable financial collapse", reports "Reuters".

The reason is unpaid dues and a budget rule that forces the world organization to return unspent money.

"The crisis is deepening, threatening the implementation of programs and risking financial collapse. And the situation will worsen in the near future," Antonio Guterres wrote in a letter to ambassadors dated January 28.

The UN is facing a financial crisis as the world body's largest donor, the United States, has reduced voluntary funding to UN agencies and refused to make mandatory payments to the UN's regular and peacekeeping budgets.

In the letter, Guterres noted that "decisions not to meet assessed contributions, which fund a significant portion of the approved regular budget, have already been formally announced."

It was not immediately clear which country or countries he was referring to.

"Either all Member States meet their obligations to pay in full and on time, or Member States must fundamentally overhaul their financial rules to prevent imminent financial collapse," he insisted, warning that the cash could run out by July.
