Russia: Official response from the Americans never followed - 1

Russia will act carefully and responsibly after the expiration of the New START treaty with the US, which limits the strategic nuclear arsenals of both countries, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told journalists, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.

The treaty signed in 2010 expires today at midnight, and Ushakov pointed out that Moscow has not yet received a response from Washington to the proposal for its possible extension, TASS notes.

"As you know, on September 22, 2025, we proposed to the Americans to extend the basic quantitative limits for one year within the framework of voluntary self-restraints. However, there was no official response from the Americans," the adviser said.

"We remain open to finding ways to negotiate and ensure strategic stability," Ushakov noted.

The New START treaty imposes limits on each party, including up to 800 missile carriers and heavy bombers and up to 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads. It also includes a verification mechanism, according to Agence France-Presse.

Moscow has previously accused Washington of obstructing inspections provided for by the treaty, which were suspended in the context of the war in Ukraine.

In September 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to Washington to extend the term of the treaty by one year - a proposal that his American counterpart Donald Trump described as a "good idea", but to which the United States ultimately did not respond, AFP notes.
