Greek police have dismantled a criminal organization that exploited men from Romania, Sky TV reported, BTA reported.
According to authorities, the group members targeted Romanian citizens looking for work, promising them employment in construction and guaranteed accommodation.
However, after their arrival in Greece, the victims were subjected to labor and financial exploitation. The members of the group took away their identity documents and forced them to beg for hours in busy areas of the cities.
The police operation resulted in the arrest of seven people, including three who are believed to have played a leading role in the criminal scheme.
In cooperation with non-governmental organizations, protection and support were provided to 12 Romanian citizens, and in cooperation with Romanian authorities, other possible victims of the criminal group are being sought.
The operation was carried out with the support of the US Department of Homeland Security.
